Established in 2007, The Kitchen Salon.com was a direct result of Graphic Designer/Poet/Blogger Imani Lateef’s encouragement and knowledge for his wife, Yasu, to take all the information she had compiled into notebooks and binders and publish her information on her own website.
Upon graduation from Asset’s Business Course, Yasu’s plan has been to transform her dot com to a land based natural hair care resource center within the community.
TheKitchenSalon.com is a leader in the Northwest Ohio Region providing Natural Hair Care Resources to the public with the sponsoring of Meetups, Workshops and Toledo’s first Natural Hair & Beauty Expo. The website also provides media coverage of these events as well as featuring inspirational people and businesses, and publishing useful guides about transitioning to hairlocking to addressing social & political hair issues.
Before the website, The Kitchen Salon was originally “It’s Natural, A Gathering” which were workshops conducted by Yasu since the start of the new Millenium. Today, The Kitchen Salon is one of the most trusted resources in natural hair.
In 2012, The Kitchen Salon started a Book Club for Naturals that will include workshops, events, giveaways and Films that speak to the African American Culture.
“Kitchen” refers to not only the place within a home or building where food is prepared, but it also refers to what African American Culture describes as the hair nearest the nape of the neck (aka “the kitchen” whereby the hair is often gathered together in small “balls”). Likewise, it has been the natural practice that people gather in the kitchen of the home to eat and talk about everything from children, to shopping, to beauty.
A “salon” is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase their knowledge of the participants through conversation, in urban settings, among like-minded people.
