i have been natural for a while now, locked since September 2009. I would agree that the mental transition is a big part of the switch. I enjoyed being natural, braiding, twisting and wearing a fro, but when it was time to lock, I thought about so many things... can i get a job, will i have to wear wigs for interviews, will i hate it and then have to cut it off, will i regret locking because of the lack of versatility. Two years in, i see that many of my concerns were simply from lack of knowledge. I have WAAAY more flexibility with styles than I ever thought, at my last interview I did wear a wig but when i got the job, I walked in au naturale and havent looked back. I am not much for taking pictures and posting them but the new timeline on facebook made me review my styles over the past few years, it was quite interesting to look at the path my hair has taken. As they grown longer, I think I will take more pix to chronicle the journey!

Finally I feel free and connected to my ancestors. As a young person my self esteem was hurt by the fact that my hair, even with a perm, was nappy and straight from Africa - as the other kids said. I, of course wanted that silky straight, cute permed style that the good hair girls rocked. I wore a natural in the fifth grade because of really bad eczema and HATED every minute of it. My saving grace - a jheri curl.... Finally - about 6 years ago (mid 30s) I gave up the fight and went all natural, first in braids, then twa, now locks. I embrace my history, my name, my beauty, the fact that I am straight from AFRICA and my hair texture is beautiful not shameful. Had I known this in the fifth grade - my journey would have been so much different. What resonates most is that young girls are still struggling with those questions and we - naturally enlightened women - have to do a better job of expressing the beauty of our naturalness.

When reading such passages, I am always reminded of a struggle that my ancestors had that was passed onto me. Not having a true sense of identity because someone else stripped them of it was how the images of beauty was portrayed in-as-umuch as it could be. Since the countenance of my elders was often lacking, but yet pre-filled with strength and dignity it made up for any lack of pride in physical appearance my elders would have struggled with.

I see this as racism on the dean"s and principal's part. I see if I have read this correctly you have white students with facial hair and shaggy hair it that considered ungroomed? This is an shame that adults would place their form of racism into rules to out cast certain students. I don't mean just black students there are different forms of racism out there. If you are and true catholic or christian the bible does not judge only God has the right to judge and God does not judge your hair or clothing. God judges your heart, soul. How can you be an catholic school and teaching to be judgmental on the sly?

Hi Latisha, congratulations on going natural! As you continue to grow in confidence, your daughter will benefit from it and there won't be anything that anyone could say to minimize the greatness of being natural. The products that are being made available today are wonderful additions to already great hair care at home. It sounds like to take great care for you and your daughter's hair and the products you are using, I have heard great reviews of. Thank you so much for visiting and sharing your story with us!
