Join The Kitchen Salon Book Club

The Kitchen Salon is pleased to be the host of the Natural Hair Book Club! Natural Hair has become one of the most important experiences Black Women are discussing today. From Blogs and websites to Youtube channels and products, Women are also inspired by what they have learned and in turn, are sharing their experiences and research with others.

While many naturals are creating hand made wire jewelry, crocheted and knitted hats and accessories, there is a large community of natural hair and body products available as well. Still, being natural has inspired many others to create art or music or literature. Even though many don’t consider that posting content on websites is a form of publishing, it is indeed. And there are many who have also formally published books and magazines with a focus on Natural Hair Care, Styles, Locs/Dreads and Personal Stories as well.

I decided to start a Book Club because I felt it was important to encourage more reading and promote literacy. In this day of electric-everything, even our children are encouraged to learn via computers, smart boards and standardized tests. They aren’t learning cursive writing anymore, and many assignments are mostly done on electronic smart boards in class. But there is something about picking up a book and becoming engulfed in the story, the location, the characters that other experiences don’t always offer. The personalized feeling of turning pages and taking the time to study the words and story is something that is missing today. Naturals and Professionals are still writing books today and I want to support their work just as much as I want to support the company that creates healthy hair products or culturally inspiring art or soul stirring music.

Thus, the Book Club was a personal desire to bring like minded people together, to learn more, talk more, and love themselves more with the knowledge and information they receive from reading. To participate, you can follow the reading schedule and chime in on discussions that are posted in our forum as  well as Facebook. You do not have to have a Facebook account to participate.
