This month the African American online community has been shocked with two recent deaths. We are mourning the loss two beautiful young women who dedicated a portion of their lives to inspire other women and young ladies to embrace their natural beauty.
Domineque Banks of the popular Youtube Channel Longhairdontcare2011 died of complications with Lupus at the age of 27. This vibrant natural hair vlogger shared her journey from her Big Chop to beyond waist length, all natural hair and was a cosmetology student. A fund was set up to raise money for her final expenses this week. The goal of $10,000 was exceeded by over $7,000! The out pour of love and support by the online community has helped to ease the pain and stress her family is facing.
Karyn Washington, the Founder of For Brown Girls and the #DarkSkinRedLipProject died suddenly at the age of 22. Because she was suffering from depression, she was unable to see herself in the way she encouraged so many others to see themselves. Her motto:
“As humans, regardless of color, age, socio-economic status, gender, and other characteristics, we MUST build each other up rather than tear each other down in order to change the world and create a better place for our children and future generations. As women, it is imperative as well as our duty to love ourselves unconditionally, smile and laugh often, and NEVER allow ANYONE to steal our joy.”
These are words we often say, but less often practice. From the preacher to the teacher, it is easier to say it than do it. Our hearts are with the families of these young women and we offer prayers for comfort for those left to mourn their passing.
