Transitioning From Relaxed to Natural Hair

If you decide to grow out your relaxer from extensions such as braids, it is important to remember these things:

  • Avoid braiding too tight as this may cause small bumps to occur that can later become hair loss.
  • Avoid leaving extensions in for long periods of time. At the 2 month mark, it will be time to redo the braids or twists along the perimeter. You don’t want the hair to lock.
  • When removing extensions, be mindful that there will be a lot of hair that will come out. This is the normal shedding that would have taken place anyhow. Take your time removing extensions and don’t be afraid to dampen each one and pick it loose using a metal tipped rat tail comb.
  • Avoid adding too much of the extension hair in with yours. If you have fine hair, it is possible to lose an entire braid from the scalp due to stress on the hair. This hair may or may not grow back.

Once you have reached the desired length of new growth, you can make plans to do The Big Chop (AKA, The BC)!
